Heavenly Creatures Uncut Version
There are at least two versions of this movie. The original version is known
as the 'uncut New Zealand version'. This is the longest version, about 108 minutes.
The European and American versions are shorter, about 99 minutes. Here is a
description of all of the extra scenes/moments in the NZ version that are not
in the US version:
- The Christchurch prologue is longer, with scenes of the Avon River and some
cyclists, and corresponding narration.
- When Pauline comes to visit Juliet at Ilam, you can see the "Ilam" sign as
she rides past it; the woodland chase scene with Juliet's brother is longer,
and Juliet has more lines with him (she calls him "a rotten little turd"), threatening
to sneak in his room and mess up all his toys and such, before he runs off.
- Juliet & Paul's running-through-the-forest singing scene is longer; it
includes a few minutes where you see Juliet take off her skirt, while they sing
the "The charm of her smile so beguiled Don Diego that he rode a mile, for the
charm of her smile!" before they do the "Her face is a dream" line and run into
the farmer guy.
- The Port Levy scene opens with Juliet, Paul, and J's brother in the backseat
of the Hulmes' car, all of them singing "How Much Is That Doggie In The Window?"
except for Mr. Hulme, who does the "arf arf" when Hilda encourages him to. In
the U.S. version you can still hear the tune once they're at Port Levy, but
the whole singing-in-the-car is axed.
- After Mrs. Hulme brushes Paul's hair and they tell her about Diello, the two
girls stand next to each other and hold hands/hug, while Mrs. Hulme calls them
"a couple of Borovnian princesses if ever I saw them" and refers to the pair as
"my daughter....and, my foster daughter," while Pauline beams.
- When Juliet runs off crying, there are more scenes of Pauline running after
her, including a helicopter shot of Pauline from above, yelling "Julie!
Julie!"
- In the car on the trip home, after Juliet & Paul have had their Fourth
World experience and Paul is talking about "that special part of the brain that
can appreciate the Fourth World", there is a line right before that, from her
diary, that was cut in the U.S. version; she says "We now know we are not genii
as we thought". ("Genii" being the plural of "genius".) She also says "When
we die, we will go to the Fourth World."
- When Juliet is in the sanitorium, you can see a male patient coughing up
blood into a bowl.
- During the scene where the clay version of the boarder guy John gets
squished by the castle gate as he leans down to pick up the jewel, you actually
see his clay body get cut in half.
- Pauline's poem ("The Ones I Worship") includes the line "Both sets of eyes,
though different far, hold many mysteries strange" (they just look into each
other's eyes) and "impassively they watch the race of man decay and change."
(An amazing bit of morphing! We see the pair dressed up as Borovnian royalty,
with crowns, gowns, and holding chalices on some sort of palace balcony. They
raise a toast. Then during "decay and change" they morph into clay versions
of themselves.)
- After the scene where Juliet and Paul talk about going to Hollywood (and steal
stuff for the fare), they go out on the Hulmes' upstairs balcony and talk about
all the actors they're going to meet. Pauline wonders what they'll do if their
idols are married; Juliet merely smiles and tells her they can simply "moider
any odd wives that get in our way" or something.
- There's a lengthy scene at a country club, where the Hulmes are seen playing
tennis with Bill Perry. Off in the woods watching, Juliet & Paul hurl a rock
into a stream, splashing the nasty psychiatrist's pants ("A direct hit!"
"Everyone will think he's peed himself!") in revenge. Then they observe Hilda
Hulme and Bill together, and comment how he doesn't seem as ill as they were
"led to believe"...
- This leads to a lengthy flashback; the Hulmes at dinner, Hilda suggests that
Bill come to stay with them to recuperate from his "illness". Juliet gets excited
("There's something desperately exciting about bodies on stretchers!"); but
in actuality he comes out of a regular car by himself, looking perfectly fine.
Juliet mocks his dull "Hello".
- Then we segue back into the girls watching the adults again. Paul wonders if
Bill wants "into her trousers"; Juliet assures her "only Daddy gets into Mummy's
trousers". Mr. Hulme sits in front of a Canterbury College disciplinary board,
who tells him it's just not working out, despite his protests. They suggest that
he'd be needed back in England, but he mentions that he has his daughter's
health to consider, she needs a warm climate. They insist and tell him he has
until the end of the year to resign. He is seen at home weeping while Hilda
& Bill are laughing in another room.
- When Juliet bursts in on Hilda in bed with Bill, Hilda first insists she was
just bringing him tea, and they ask if she wants some. (?!) Juliet tells them,
"Don't try and fob me off!", and then Hilda explains the "we're in love" stuff.
- After Pauline's bath and lecture from Honora, the Riepers are eating dinner
together at the table. In voiceover she relates that she's been forbidden to go
to Ilam until she's "eight stone and more cheerful"; she bemoans her mother's
ignorance and mentions how she's been criticizing Mrs. Hulme. She then imagines
Honora choking to death, and visualizes her father being impaled on a carving
knife. After coming back to reality, the elderly grandmother-esque lady tugs on
a wishbone with her, and urges her to make a wish.
- After the girls' bedroom scene and the lovemaking, once Paul says the line
about "the joy of the thing called sin," the Borovnian tower unfurls a banner
(similar to the previous "MAD" one), that says "SIN", and then blood bursts out
of the letters. A bunch of clay Borovnians cheer.
- The final shot of the movie shows Pauline's face covered in blood as she yells
"No!!" (In the U.S. version you can hear it but only after the fade to black.)
Be sure to check out the Uncut
pictures from The Borovnian Archives . They are great, and I mean GREAT pictures
from the director's cut. These pictures were formerly on 'The Kate Winslet Show',
but that page doesn't exist anymore. Anyway, they're BACK. Thanks Juliana!
